Frequently asked electric scooter battery questions & answers

What kind of batteries do e-scooters use?

Electric scooters use lithium ion (li-ion) batteries that have built-in battery management systems (BMS). Li-ion batteries last long, charge quickly, are made of individual cells, and have excellent energy density (exchange of energy for weight/size).

The battery cells are classified by size: 18650 cells (18 mm x 65 mm) or 21700 cells (21 mm x 70 mm) are common. The larger the cells and pack, the greater the overall capacity. Li-ion batteries are classified by voltage (V) and Amp hours (Ah). The voltage is the number of battery cells in a pack. The amp hours indicate the capacity that can be stored in the battery. For example, the EMOVE Cruiser has a 52V 30 Ah battery, meaning there are 52 cells (18650 cells) with 30 Ah of overall capacity.

All of our Dualtron, EMOVE, and Kaabo electric scooters use li-ion batteries with 18650 or 21700 cells manufactured by Samsung, LG, Dynavolt or another UL-certified provider.

Are all electric scooter batteries the same?

No, not all scooter batteries are the same, but they have similarities. All electric scooters are configured to function with a specific battery, motor controller(s), motor(s) and other electronics. To replace or swap batteries and avoid having to make additional modifications to the internal components, select a new li-ion battery from a reliable source (VoroMotors) that’s the same size (V/Ah) as the battery that came with the scooter.

Bear in mind that purchasing batteries from unverified sellers and manufacturers is dangerous, as established brands like LG and Samsung have certifications, technology and protocols in place that help ensure public safety. Each scooter brand may use different internal connectors for the battery, which can make components incompatible with models even though they have equivalent specs, so it’s important to know the products and how they work together to make substitutions.

What is the best battery for electric scooters?

Li-ion batteries are the best for electric scooters. Some electric scooters for kids and cheap electric scooters for adults use lead-acid batteries, which are inexpensive but have poor energy density compared to li-ion batteries.

How much do e-scooter batteries cost?

That depends on the size of the battery (overall capacity). As with all electronic devices, the battery is a significant part of the manufacturing cost (and often weight). Shop battery by model above.

Is it possible to replace batteries in electric scooters?

Yes, with conditions, as you can upgrade to a bigger battery given that you have compatible components, configuration and the physical space. Some budget electric scooters house the battery in the stem. Most electric scooter batteries are stored in the deck, and a few models have removable batteries. Along with the battery, the scooter’s wiring, some lights or electronics, and often the motor controller are fitted into the deck. The battery, motors and motor controller must be configured for the same voltage to work properly, which includes upgrading the motor controller along with the battery and adjusting the P-settings. Overall, electric scooter batteries are replaceable, making scooters easier to maintain long-term.

How long does an electric scooter battery last?

That depends, if it’s how long the battery lasts per charge (range) or over all time (battery life). We’ll cover both.

An electric scooter’s range is the distance in miles (or kilometers) per charge, and is estimated based on an average sized rider (150 lbs) traveling at a low or moderate speed (10-15 mph). Actual or real-world range depends on a number of factors, including the rider’s weight, riding style (slow or fast, relaxed or aggressive), riding environment (road conditions, incline), and weather.

Overall, a battery’s life is measured by the number of charge/discharge cycles not the number of years it is in use. Li-ion batteries can withstand 300 to 500 cycles before the battery’s capacity starts to degrade. The BMS prolongs battery life by managing the charge/discharge process.

Are electric scooters a fire hazard? / Can electric scooter fires happen?

Li-ion batteries can explode or catch fire if there is physical damage to the pack or cells, it is exposed to extreme temperatures, or if the charge is outside of the battery’s voltage range. For example, the voltage range for a battery with 18650 cells is between 2.5V and 4.2V. If the battery goes outside of the range (above or below) when the battery is being charged or discharged, it can cause overheating, smoking, and explosion. This perceived volatility is why large li-ion batteries and products with them built-in can be difficult to ship, and why most airlines prohibit li-ion batteries over a certain size on flights. The BMS in electric scooter batteries electronically keeps the battery within a safe voltage range by controlling the charging/discharging process, and preventing overcharging, which helps preserve battery life and thwart electrical accidents.
