Electric scooters come in two configurations: single motor and dual motor. Motors are housed in the front and rear wheel hubs. They are brushless direct current (BLDC) motors or brushed DC current motors, with BLDC being more common in current models. Motor power rating is based on the motor’s power consumption (in watts (W)). The higher the rating, the more powerful the motor.

Single motor electric scooters

Single motor electric scooters have motor power ranging 200W to 1600W. If there’s only one motor, the preference is rear-wheel drive, as the rider’s weight distribution is heavier over the rear wheel.

Dualt motor electric scooters

Dual motor electric scooters have motor power ranging 1500W to 12000W, usually with equal power to both wheels. Some models, like the EMOVE RoadRunner, have mixed motors with a 350W front motor and a 500W rear motor.

Eco/Turbo mode

Most electric scooters have an Eco mode, which limits the amount of power sent to the motors and the scooter’s top speed to optimize range and extend battery life. When Turbo mode is enabled, the e-scooter’s performance settings (P-settings) optimize top speed.

Single/Dual motor mode

Dual motor scooters have Single/Dual motor modes. When in single motor mode, the rear motor is active and the front motor is idle. Dual motor mode engages both motors. Although riding in single motor mode on a dual motor scooter is okay for its performance, it’s generally better to engage both motors as the inactive motor (the front) will create resistance or drag rather than spin freely.

What motor is used on an electric scooter?

The rating is how much power the motor consumes, not how much power it is capable of producing. Continuous power rating is the power the motor can steadily produce without overheating. Peak power rating is the highest power the motor can deliver for a short period of time.

How powerful is an electric scooter motor?

Electric scooter motors range in power from 200W up to 5750W per motor, with max continuous power up to 11500W. To give some context, the average shared electric scooter has a single motor with 250W of power for 12-15 mph top speed. The EMOVE Touring electric scooter has a rear 600W motor and 25 mph top speed. The Dualtron Storm Limited has dual 5750W motors and 71 mph top speed.
