Electric Scooter Suspension

Most electric scooters have some form of suspension. The most common type of suspension is spring, which is often built into the front and/or rear wheel’s design. Sometimes, there is a spring in the scooter’s stem for added cushioning. Other more advanced suspension types include hydraulic suspension and rubber suspension.

What is spring suspension?

Spring suspension in electric scooters is designed to dampen the road’s bumps. Springs are often part of the scooter’s swingarms, neck, or underneath the deck, and help absorb impact. The EMOVE Touring has dual spring suspension with springs on either side of the front wheel, an encapsulated spring in the stem, and two springs in the rear underside of the deck.

What is hydraulic suspension?

Hydraulic suspension in electric scooters is not very common, but Kaabo electric scooters are known for this style of suspension. The Kaabo Wolf line of scooters have dual hydraulic shock absorbers on the front fork, which are similar to those found on motorcycles.

What is rubber suspension?

Rubber or elastomeric suspension systems use rubber cushions rather than metal springs to dampen impact. When rebounding off a bump, you will feel less of the impact with rubber suspension than you would with spring suspension. For many riders, rubber suspension feels very stiff. As the rubber heats up during riding and in warm weather, it provides more give and has a bouncier feel.

What is adjustable rubber suspension?

Dualtron electric scooters have 45-step adjustable rubber suspension. Adjustments to the suspension system include changing the angle of the swingarm (3 steps), altering the motor shaft distance (3 steps) and using a cartridge with a different hardness (5 steps). Using these key areas, you can make the scooter ride a bit higher or lower, and select softer or harder responsiveness for the cartridge. The rubber cartridges are replaceable, housed inside the scooter’s frame, and are low-to-no maintenance features.

Differences between single and dual suspension

Single suspension means that the electric scooter only has suspension in either the front or rear end. Dual suspension means the electric scooter has suspension in both the front and rear end.

Dual suspension is preferable to single suspension, as it improves ride quality, overall stability, and better keeps the scooter connected to the road. Most importantly, it allows you to more comfortably ride for longer periods of time. Oftentimes, single suspension is only on the frontend of the scooter when the majority of your weight is carried over the rear, so you feel the impact. Dual suspension helps to balance and smooth out the road’s imperfections.

Which elceric scooter has the best suspension?

The best suspension on an electric scooter depends on the rider’s preference. Some riders prefer the suspension to be stiff (less give) while others may like suspension soft (more give), and that may also depend on the riding environment. If you frequently ride on poor terrain, you might prefer softer suspension, so it’ll relax into the grooves a bit better. In general, spring and hydraulic suspension systems tend to be softer and rubber suspension tends to be stiffer.

How can i imporve my scooter suspension?

Most electric scooters do not come with adjustable suspension, but for those that do, you can customize the feel to your preference. On the Dualtron scooters, you can swap the rubber suspension cartridge for a softer or stiffer ride and on the EMOVE RoadRunner, you can turn a knob to increase or decrease suspension response. For scooters with suspension systems that cannot be adjusted, you can sometimes upgrade the components for parts. Another way to improve road feel without having to upgrade is by decreasing your tire’s PSI (from 45 PSI to 35 PSI, for example). When your tires are less inflated, they help cushion against the road more. Keep in mind they will deliver a shorter range at this inflation, but for improved ride quality.

Do electric scooters need suspension?

When selecting an electric scooter, it’s important that it has some suspension, as the small tire size means the rider feels much of the road’s impact. Suspension is designed to absorb bumps and maximize performance. It also helps the scooter better maintain contact between the tires and the road, and improves overall ride quality, steering stability and handling.

Can you add suspension to an electric scooter?

On some electric scooters, it is possible to add suspension if it didn’t come pre-installed. Oftentimes, installing suspension is a highly technical process, involving troubleshooting and customizing of components. All electric scooters at VoroMotors come with some form of suspension.
